First European cemetery in Australia

Despite this part of Sydney being named the Sutherland Shire (or Godzone - as in God's Own Country - to locals), it wasn't actually named after this Sutherland. The full story here.

Sutherland died of consumption (TB), on 30 April 1770.

  2. Interesting post Sally. I hadn't known about this burial, I thought they all happened at sea.

  5. Well I'll be, I grew up in the Shire and we were always told in school that it was named after Forby Sutherland...indeed I've been to that grave site, @ Cooks landing place many, many times.

  8. That is a wonderful place to spend eternity. It seems such a waste to die and be buried and never smell the sea again or see the sky. This is just a memory and a reminder of who is here. I guess it reminds me of what is yet to come for all of us. Sad. But true.

  9. Well done Sally! Bravo! This post took a lot of work. I came here because I knew on your timing you would already be May 1st, and I was confused as to how to present the May theme. I wasn't sure if the theme was to make Maui not look like Maui or to be of another location altogether....I'm still confused! :-)

  10. What an interesting twist to the theme, the place that could have been Sydney!
Many thanks for your comments on my blog over the past few days, especially about Anzac day. Sorry I haven't been able to reciprocate but I have been away for almost a week and just catching up now. In the process forgot to enrol for the theme day but am participating anyway. Cheers!
