A typical, suburban red mail box. You will find these every few streets around every city, suburb and town in Australia. Mail is collected every day by 6pm, for next day deliveryin your city, second day delivery inter-city.
But what is that green box alongside it for??? A snail mail postcard for the first to tell me! (Yes, I know the answer....)
Many Daily Photo sites are participating in the 1st April theme, "A Public Mail Box", please use the links to below to visit them. Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.

Beautiful shade of red and it looks very well maintained. Yours is the first one I'm commenting on today. Time difference is SO interesting!!
ReplyDeleteMiss those red boxes. Used to post letters back home using them.
ReplyDeleteHmm not sure what the green box is for, but there are usually yellow ones for express post right?
Green ones, hmmm recycle mail? :-p
Green bin for recycling? Hmm, I've never seen one.
ReplyDeletean automatic radar for speed control ? they look like that in France !
ReplyDeleteI think you've been the fisrt to post! About the other box, i have had the same idea than juls, maybe a radar?
ReplyDeleteWe have those green boxes too. They are delivery drop off boxes for the postmen and hold the mail to be delivered on the next section of their round.
ReplyDeleteA quiz on theme day. Very original and I have no idea. Maybe I will find hints in other cities around the world.
ReplyDeletebeing an aussie , I won't guess... as I already know... Gerald's the man!
ReplyDeleteCute red box! As for the Green box-I go with Gerald's guess.
ReplyDeleteUnusually small and cute.
ReplyDeleteAs for the green one, Gerald has the answer, but I thought it was a delivery mailbox for an apartment or condo complex...
Maybe it's a box for keeping shy red boxes in?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea, but am guessing that Gerald has given it away?
ReplyDeleteToo late for me to make a guess but truth is I'd not have known. Shhhhh don't tell anyone cos I've lived in Oz and should know better.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo - you live in a beautiful city.
Jilly x
Where do I send the postcard, Gerald? Promise to put it in this box!
ReplyDeleteit's cute but it's been overshadowed with a big alien box =)
ReplyDeleteYap Sally, Brits streaks to NZ, Well I don't surprise. Don't you have a smiler box in Sydney? The small one looks practical and nice.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea about green one, until I read Gerald's comment.
Very nice, neat and compact!
ReplyDeleteMing from NYC also posted a green box next to the public mailbox. Until I read her explanation I had never seen or heard of a "holding" mailbox.
ReplyDeleteGreen box for mail storage between routes? Like the one in NYC.
ReplyDeleteThe mailman can't carry 50 lbs of mail with him all day long so he leaves most of it in the green box and come back to replenish his mail bag.
That or I have an overactive imagination.
Green ones are used by Martians; ET write home.
ReplyDeletesally - I love postcards - my address is on the contact page at my main website http://www.geraldengland.co.uk/
ReplyDeleteThanks Gerald - I'll be sure to try to find something "appropriate" !
ReplyDeleteI like this picture! The mail box looks very cheerful!
ReplyDeleteBTW,thanks for dropping by at ADP
Awww, it's very cute! Red seems to be a very popular color among mailboxes.
ReplyDeleteSuper shot and quiz for our theme day, Sally. I'm just now slogging through the last of our 66 theme day entries. . .and the moment I read your question, I knew the answer before reading Gerald's. We have a similar system here with drab green boxes.
