This morning I made my annual sunrise visit to Sculpture By The Sea. Come with me over the next couple of weeks while we explore. I must say I found it a teensy bit underwhelming this year...it was as if some of the artists with whom I have become familiar rummaged in their cupboards and found their second, third, or tenth best works....

I saw this young tourist and his mates (I assume they were tourists cos they were speaking German) on the Bondi-Tamarama walk during the recent Sculpture By The Sea exhibition. I wonder who or what they were planning to water-bomb????

Not a Sculpture (Sculpture By The Sea 2009)

First, a great big Hello to all my readers, and especially Sculpture By The Sea fans (hi, Nathalie!!) . I am really, really sorry I don't get back often to comment or visit your blogs, but life got so much busier this year when I took on a new job, it is all I can do to keep the blog going - going out and taking pics as well as posting and researching.

But all your comments come in to my email and I do read them!

OK, so this is not a sculpture. It is the home of a man known as the "Bondi Caveman". He lives on this ledge overlooking the sea. Today he is in the news, which is why I am posting this. He has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman visitor to S x S, and has been denied bail.

You can read the story here. Time will tell if he is guilty, but I thought it was a newsworthy aspect to the exhibition. Tomorrow coverage of the sculptures resumes (J Bar - there are 114 in this year's exhibition; I will not be showing them all!!)

Update: His house was demolished this morning (18 November) as it is on Crown (public) land.

Bondi sunrise

Every year I like to visit the Sculpture By The Sea exhibition in the early hours of the morning before there are many people there. SBTS started on this past weekend and continues for the next two weeks. Over the next little while, I'll be bringing you some of the pieces on display.

If you are in Sydney, it's a great, free exhibition, located along the cliff walkway and between South Bondi (it begins just after Bondi Icebergs club) and Tamarama, and on Tamarama Beach.

The Flight of the Bogong Moth (Skywatch Friday)

A pic from my stock of Sculpture By The Sea snaps from last year. (To view all my 2008 Sculpture By The Sea posts CLICK HERE.) I hadn't previously published it, even though it was a favourite - I was saving it for a Skywatch Friday, and then it kind of got lost in the picture vault!

Perched on one of the sandstone cliffs between Bondi and Tamarama, which make the most dramatic open air art gallery, is this wonderful piece by Marguerite Derricourt. It was yet another favourite of mine.

Derricourt says: "On their annual migration from Queensland to the caves of the Snowy Mountains, the bogong moths are blown off-course and end up clustering in their thousands on lighted windows in the city."

Some years in Sydney, there are bogongs a-plenty. Other years, none. You can read all about them here, and here . Bogongs were an important protein food source for Aborigines who roasted them in hot ashes and mashed the bodies to make 'moth meat', which is said to have a nutty taste.

Exercise with a view, Bondi

This woman stopped on her early morning run long enough to contemplate sunrise over the Pacific Ocean at Bondi. Although in complete shadow now, it would be interesting to spend the day there documenting how the shadow shifts.

I'm away on holidays enjoying myself at the beach. I'm therefore re-posting some sandstone photos I've used previously, some more than two years ago....

Taking Leave - Skywatch Friday- Sydney Sandstone Tour Part 5

Sitting on a sandstone ledge at dawn, contemplating the ocean is a very Sydney thing to do. The artist of this piece, Peter Tilley, says it is "a reflection on the dilemmas faced when a decision to move on is made."

The ugliest building in Bondi?

Not everything can be beautiful, even where the Beautiful People live. My guess is that this block isn't much longer for this world. Those backyard chairs, including the comfy armchair are positioned just above the coastal walkway, with the magnificent views of the Pacific.

Morning laps, Bondi Baths

Morning laps at Bondi Baths.

Bondi Icebergs was founded in 1929 by some dedicated winter swimmers. Every Sunday from May to September, over 700 male and female swimmers compete in races. To be a full swimming member you must swim three out of four Sundays for a period of five years. There are 90-0dd junior members, aged 5 -17, called 'Bondi Icecubes'.

The official winter swimming season opens on the first Sunday in May, when blocks of ice are ceremoniously thrown into the pool.

Sucked in?

At first I thought a whale breaching, and in fact there have been whales off Bondi recently. The mothers and babies come quite close to the coast in the migration to the southern oceans during spring.

But on looking closer, I think it's just a strange water formation.

The Award Winners (Sculpture By The Sea 31) - Skywatch Friday

I know I'm supposed to limit myself to one photo a day, but, well, while I try to stick to the "rules", there's just times when it's impossible.

Today we look at the works which won the major awards at this year's Sculpture By The Sea. And apart from further Skywatch Fridays, I'm drawing a halt to more from this year's exhibition. And now, the major critical prize winner. Titled She Thought, it's by Mark McClelland, made of mild steel and bronze. McClelland's comment: "She liked to look a long way out to sea sometimes - wondering at the place where it flew up into the sky."
