Orange and Black, Redfern

This former pub, now closed and boarded up, in George St, Redfern still has its decorative art deco tiles. Can you see the spot from which I took the detail?

I hope urban remnants like these survive the relentless swing of wreckers' balls and development.

Haymarket Hotel

An old bank with lots and wodwork and marble, recently converted into a pub. Some friends and I went there recently for a drink. Very nice it was too!

Royal Exhibition Hotel, Surry Hills

"Hotel" is a word often used for pub in Australia, and this building is primarily a pub. Many pubs also contain(ed) accommodation upstairs....and many are no longer used for that purpose. However the Royal Exhibition, right opposite Central Station, has 14 rooms, which from their website look pretty nice.

Marlborough Hotel, Newtown

The Marlborough pub in Newtown. Pubs have traditionally been called Hotels in Australia, probably because most used to offer accommodation upstairs. Some in the country still do, but it is much rarer nowadays. I took ths photo just because I loved the neon blue.

Beers in Newtown

It seems every cafe in Newtown has these huge windows opening to the street. So does this pub. A great place to watch the world go by, and these fellas obliged me with a photo.

Cauliflower Hotel, Waterloo

In the older inner Sydney suburb of Waterloo, amongst heavily trafficked streets, and a congestion of power lines and traffic lights, is the Cauliflower Hotel, first established in 1838. (A pub is often called a hotel in Australia - derived, I think, from hostelry. Many used to offer accommodation in the upstairs section.)

These beer signs used to be found outside every pub. They are becoming rarer nowadays, but here is a beautifully preservd one at the Hollywood Hotel, Surry Hills.

The view from the Harbour View pub

From the outside terrace of the Harbour View pub in The Rocks, you can check out the returning bridge climbers (many of whom give a wave) and the boats on the harbour beyond the Hyatt Hotel.

The Harp

Painting on the outside wall of The Harp Irish Pub at Tempe. It faces the very busy Princes Highway and is always a welcome sight after the light industry of the area.

Not one of those prettified brewery-fake Irish pubs, The Harp attracts some high quality musical acts.

Three wise monkeys

Pub on the corner of George and Liverpool Streets. The Australasian Bank branch was established on this site in 1879 and the current building dates from 1886. It was a bank until 1998.

The building is a good example of Victorian Italianate architecture.

Many bank branches have closed in the past few years, and all the while the banks have been making massive profits.

I think the "Three Wise Monkeys" may have been equally appropriate for its former life as a bank, too!
