City from Towers Street Arncliffe (Skywatch Friday)

This is the view over the inner southern suburbs towards the city, from near my house (I don't have a view, unfortunately). Overseas visitors have commented to me that they are surprised at how green Sydney is. I don;t quite know what their image of Sydney is, but it gets a fair amount of rainfall, and I guess compared to some cities I've visited, there are a lot of trees, and parks. You can see more recent apartment developments, but much of Sydney's population still lives in Single dwellings, with backyards.

Have you ever been surprised by preconceptions visitors hold of your city?

  1. Magnificent captures! Lovely skyline! And the colors in the last shot are breathtaking! Well, people usually associate rain and gray skies with Seattle and while we certainly have our share of both, we also get really gorgeous skies, beautiful colors and when the sun does shine, there are few places as beautiful as would seem to be the case with Sydney! Happy SWF! Enjoy your weekend!

  2. Nope. But then again Tungelsta is a very small place. Do you know hom many parks there are in Sydney? In Stockholm there are around 300.

  4. Beautiful glow over the city. I live on an island and people are still amazed how small my town is in the flesh.

  8. These are great. Is that the hill behind my place or the one at the back of the park?

  10. With a city skyline like that, it's easy to understand where the misconception's coming from. I guess when they see the skyscrapers, they think of NYC or something, I dunno.

I've discovered that many people are very surprised that Metro Manila is such a huge city — cosmopolitan, grungy, modern, historical — the whole shebang. Guess it's hard to believe when ones encounters with Filipinos are just those in the service industry.

Both of your photos are beautiful, but I love the second one!

  14. Seeing the CBD from a distance often seems as if it is just a poster pasted on the horizon, somehow unreal, but that sounds pretty stange, i suppose.I like the shots of backstreet buildings of note. Its locating them that's a quest. I used to see a large dome near Campsie and eventually located the Greek church in Belmore but its the new school next door thats impressive.
