Paths and Passages. Theme Day February 2009
A stormwater drain shouldn't be a path or passage, and this one at Maroubra Beach looked very benign when I went past last Saturday; it was being used to store surfboards while their owners were elsewhere.
Notoriously, two people died on 20 January 2008 when a sudden storm swept them along the Maroubra drain to a grilled exit further along the coast. One person managed to squeeze out of the grille and survive.
Still, stormwater drains, while in Sydney separate from the sewerage system, can still contain toxins and rubbish, and in a major storm can contain overflow sewerage. I don't think I'd be frolicking where the water emerges into the ocean as these young women were!

great choice for theme day and a good reminder also. I really enjoyed my time in Australia. I'll be back!
ReplyDeleteA very, very Sydney choice of scenes! Ah youth, to be oblivious to unapparent dangers. . .
ReplyDeleteAnd Sally, I love your new avitar photo.
Happy theme day,

The water looks so clear & clean in the photo though - They're probably thinking how could it be dangerous to swim here when it looks like this? But, I understand what you're saying. That's so sad that some died that way.
ReplyDeleteMarvelous shots, Sally! That young woman looks like a mermaid turned recently human! Just beautiful. Great choice for theme day.
ReplyDeleteOriginal choice! Have a nice Sunday, Sally! I like your new photo on your profile.
ReplyDeleteI always love your commentary and photos!
ReplyDeletegood take on the theme
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other comments. Good choice for the theme. I agree that youth ignore danger ... And I also like your profile photo.
ReplyDeletegreat narrative and quite inviting scenes Sally.
ReplyDeletehappy cdp theme day!
Interesting lateral choices and timely warnings too.
ReplyDeleteNow this is a cautionary tale if ever there was one. I would never have guessed the danger if you hadn't explained it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pic. I had almost forgot about Theme Day.
ReplyDeleteI guess they didn't know what you know! It's a beautiful shot of them.
ReplyDeleteI picked the location straight away, from the glimpse of the Maroubra Bay Hotel in the corner. An interesting choice for the theme.
ReplyDeleteI knew that Sydney wouldn't let me down. Enough cold, dark passages in Europe, give me the REAL thing! Great choice!
ReplyDeleteYouth is fearless, and reckless, too, or so it seems!
ReplyDeleteLovely pic, comes with a shudder though!
ReplyDeleteCheers!

That looks a little scary. Great shot and I adore your bathing ladies. I too wouldn't want to bathe there.
ReplyDeleteHey Sally!
ReplyDeleteHappy Theme Day.
Ya, I wont want to be near water that comes out of storm drains. But the water looks very clear though.
Hope you all are not suffering too much from the heat wave. Friends in Melb seem to be suffering!
Mmmmmmmmmm .... warrrrrrmmmmmmm !
ReplyDeleteEek. Nope, I wouldn't be caught in that spot either! Great photo of the two young women! Happy Theme Day!
ReplyDeleteI am guessing there is some raw sewage in that water. Imagine? Still a nice photo for theme day.
ReplyDeleteI missed the theme day somehow but I wrote in my Memories blog about the roads of my youth and how they were to travel in the winter time.
Origional picture for the theme day! You guys have very hot weather I saw on the news. We have the opposite.. the days are dark and cold.
ReplyDeleteREgards from Marcel
I like the picture a lot!! the water looks very clean to bad is not
ReplyDeleteAnd the water looks soooooo clear!!!
ReplyDeleteVery nicely executed; both pictures exhibit the theme for the month. The first as a passage, and the second is a path. I prefer the second one with the two girls because of the leading line drawing the eye to them.
ReplyDeleteI like the change from the top photo to the bottom. Looks can trick you.
ReplyDeleteOoo, you lucky thing, I could just jump into that warm sea! It's snowing here in York tonight!
ReplyDeleteI like your image and commentary Thanks for visiting and your kind comment.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
