Royal Exhibition Hotel, Surry Hills

Chalmers St, Surry Hills

"Hotel" is a word often used for pub in Australia, and this building is primarily a pub. Many pubs also contain(ed) accommodation upstairs....and many are no longer used for that purpose. However the Royal Exhibition, right opposite Central Station, has 14 rooms, which from their website look pretty nice.

  1. I like the overhang to protect people from the sun and the rain. Wish more builders here would do the same.

  4. I must admit I would not have known which country to plave this image in. Strangely it is very like parts of Corfu, an island I love.

  5. Great Victorian architecture. How much a night is it to stay?

  6. You must have been coming from the Devonshire Tunnel to get this view, Sally. It is a terrific angle. I dont think I have ever looked up when dashing out of tunnel and across road - too busy trying not to be skittled!!

    Wonderful shot ...

  8. Not sure how much , Kate....actually it's primarily a pub (hotel is often used for pub in Australia) though by the look of their website, there are 12 very nice rooms for rent too.

Babooshka - I think the Brits had a fair bit of involvement in bringing Victorian architecture to Corfu as well as their colonies elsewhere!

B squared: verandahs are very common here in traditional architecture _ I wish there were more - they're great for shady protection from the sun (as well as the occasional rainfall!)
