Will They See Us? (Sculpture By The Sea 25)

Will They see Us? by Ngardab Francine Riches ( a Bardi/Kariay Kimkorly woman - Western Australia). Made of wood, ochres and paint.

"My artwork represents early ancestors when they saw the arrival of the first fleet - "will they see us?"

  2. Ah, Hilda beat me to it. They definitely do seem to have a relationship to totems. I wonder if they serve the same purpose?

  4. We all had the same reaction -- so much like totems. They reminded me of all the totem poles in Kethikan, Alaska -- in color and overall feel.

  6. Totem poles as a permanent display are not associated with ABoriginal culture. However, I understand some groups carve and decorate such poles as part of funeral rituals and they are then left to weather and rot (hence there not being many in existence)
