Sister City Marker: Molineaux Point, Port Botany

Commemorating the sister ports relationship between Sydney Ports Corporation and Yokkaichi Port Authority, Japan.

Sister City relationships are fairly popular around the world. Apparently they were begun by the Eisenhower administration in the US in 1952.

Sydney City Council has sister city relationships with San Francisco (1968); Nagoya, Japan (1982); Welllington, New Zealand (1982); Portsmouth, UK (1984); Guangzhou, China (1985) and Florence, Italy (1986).

Local government areas also have sister cities. Where I live, we are sisters with Takeo, Cambodia; Tanggu, China; Bitola, Macedonia; Glyfada, Greece; Rockdale, Texas, USA; Bint Jbail, Lebanon; Yamatsuri, Japan and Gilgandra, a country town in NSW. I don't know that these relationships confer any special benefits other than a warm inner glow and trips for local dignitaries!

Do you know of any Sister City relationships your city has?

  2. Thanks for the link fenix. It's interesting, but incomplete. It only lists San Francisco for Sydney, but there are many more.

I found out mine by goign to the websites of the local councils in question (Sydney, and my local council, Rockdale).

    Sally.

  4. Hi, Sally. I wouldn't expect to see a torii gate in Sydney any more that I would here in St. Louis. Although, come to think of it, there may be one in our Japanese garden. Odd that yours isn't red-orange, like they are usually.

We have a long list of sister cities, but not as many as Lisbon. The list includes:

    Bologna, Italy
    Galway, Ireland
    Bogor, Indonesia
    Lyon, France
    Nanjing, China
    Saint-Louis, Senegal
    Samara, Russia
    Stuttgart, Germany
    Suwa, Japan
    Szczecin, Poland
    Suwa, Japan
    Yokneam Illit, Israel

The only one of these I have visited is Galway. Never heard of several of them. Lots of world to see.

I think it's really strange that Lisbon is paired with Jersey City. They couldn't be more different - I'd take Lisbon every time, except that Jersey City has killer views of lower Manhattan across the Hudson River.

  6. We don't have sister cities here, but where I live is twinned with Guterslough in Germany. I don't personally get anything out of it, but the local councilors get free trips there & local schools go on visits. A lot of towns across england are twinned with other European towns.

  7. I like your photograph. I guess I have not seen a Tori made from stainless steel before. What is the significance of the numbers at the bottom?

  13. So, fabrizio, seeing as both Sydney and Torino are sisters of Nagoya, does that make us sisters-in-law, or sisters once removed, or step-sisters or half sisters???
