Sydney's Underground Railway - St James Station

My favourite station on Sydney's underground loop - St James - with its lovely wrought iron and polished wood rails and balustrades.

Sydney's rail network is extensive. A very small portion if it goes underground, in the central city. However, it is a heavy rail network; we don't have a Metro-type rail system - fast-moving and high capacity. At last, it seems there is some discussion about providing Sydney with a metro style system - sometime over the next few decades!

  1. Oh I recognise the steps lined with yellow bands, the dark green handrails, the typical style. Lovely! And appropriate for a Monday morning too!

  2. You are correct about the loveliness of the surroundings. It must be nice to use a station that is so clean, spic and span!

  5. It look like Prague underground. We (in Italy) about cleanness are used to say: "It's so clean that you eat on the floor". Well in Sydney and in Prague I'm afraid it's so true :-)

  6. Considering the time of day you took this photo, I am surprised there is only one person in the picture. A very nice picture too, I hasten to add.

Thank you for visiting my blog yesterday and for your comments about my Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. I am into architecture today with the Brookville Community Theatre.

  7. I have to say I took the pic mid morning on a Sunday - so it was very quiet. But St James is often pretty quiet for some reason - even tho it is right in the heart of the shopping district.

  8. That is one clean and well - maintained station. I will definitely get out at that station next time I visit Sydney. A credit to your town and wonderful for tourists also to return with even more memories of such an impressive city.

  9. Looks very clean. Did they sweep it especially for your photo? Mind you, I think Aussies have been trained better not to leave rubbish about.

  11. Interesting all the comments about cleanliness! I had never thought about that, because it is just what I take for granted. Mind you, it would be a lot busier, and there would be more rubbish after a weekend peak hour, but, in general, people here don't throw rubbish around. I guess after years of anti-litter campaigns something must stick!

  14. You are right about St James being lovely...but wrong about a Metro....N.S.W. Heavy rail can convey 22% more passengers per hour than any metro line used anywhere in the world. It is just run down and not used efficiently.
