Behind The Archibald

Every year the Art Gallery of NSW has 3 art competitions – the Archibald Prize for portraiture, the Wynne Prize for landscape painting and the Sulman Prize for best subject painting, genre painting or mural project by an Australian artist.

This store room was open as paintings were being moved from here to elsewhere. As the exhibitions were underway, I assume these were unsuccessful entrants.

  1. This scene looks familiar to me. It is the way they store paintings not currently on display or not part of a ongoing display. But then this might be those not acceptable. It is hard to imagine this many not making it though.

  2. I bet there are some really good paintings in here. Just not want someone else is looking for.

  3. Agree with Jim. Imagine what stunning paintings there must be waiting in museums and art galleries, simply because there is no room to show all of them

  4. There were 693 entries for the Archibald and only 40 made it on to the walls of the AG-NSW.

  5. I have a very sneaky suspicion that with the Archibald there's a whole pile of crap as well!

  7. Love this photo. Oh the mystery of the paintings. Some of the portraits entered were fabulous. I love the winner. Also the zebra painting.
