Conaust Terminal, Glebe Island (Rozelle)

New motor vehicle imports are docked in Johnstons Bay at the Conaust Car Terminal. Australia has a very small domestic car industry. Most cars are imported, and most of those come from Japan. European cars are definitely in the minority, often very expensive, and many are regarded as being in the "luxury" class.
At this terminal, vehicles await processing before delivery to dealers.

  1. Look at the size of that monstrosity and all the cars that came out of it! Amazing.

Sally, what's the most popular car (brand and/or model) in Sidney now?

  2. As an economic developer this is a joy to see. Better though if they had been made there.

  4. That's a nice and intersting post. The parking with all the new cars is quite impressive. I wonder how many cars they can fit in this huge boat...

  5. According to one survey, the most popular cars in Australia are Toyota - 19%, Holden (General Motors)- 15% and Ford 11%. Other Japanese and Korean cars make up large proportions too. Not sure of exact numbers.

  8. Car imports are always impressive and somewhat unbelievable in scale.

In the 70s my company imported minerals to Europe from California using large VW export ships on the back haul. Great for the shipping line-no empty voyages-and an amzing lesson in global connectedness. Never forget...a ship is just a big dustbin (sort of). I love ships.

Tks for dropping in on R u T..good luck to yr lad. You might have noticed that the Indians put us down this week.

  11. Could you tell what kind of cars those all were? It looks like they're mostly Toyotas - I see some Hiluxes (Hiluxi?) right next to the ship, but the rest of the cars are so similar looking that it's hard to distinguish what marque they are...

I had a chance to see a show (I think it was on the National Geographic channel) about these car ships, and it's amazing the skill that the drivers have to get the ship loaded and unloaded in a very short amount of time.

  12. seph: I wouldn't have a clue, sorry! But Australia certainly imporsrts huge numbers of cars from Japan every year, and Toyotas are the # 1 seller here, so that would be a good guess. I guess the pnly way to find out would be to read the daily shipping news and see what is moving in and out of port!
