Augusten Burroughs and Mark Trevorrow - portrait in yellow

You know those photos you take that you're not quite sure what to do with? These are two of those. Last August I went to an evening of conversation between touring American author Augusten Burroughs and Australian entertainer - comedian and radio host, Mark Trevorrow (aka Bob Downe when doing his comedy act).

Not wishing to make a show of myself, I took the photos without flash, and my little handheld of course wasn't quite up to this inside job. But I loved the photos because it was such an enjoyable experience.

So, I've put it into the great photographic grinding mill*, said abracadabra and come out with a "pencil drawing" and a "watercolour". I am particularly pleased with the way the "still life" of water bottle, plate and glasses turned out in both. Puts me in mind a little of Giorgio Morandi.

I've also been playing around with some computer manipulated Artist Trading Cards lately, combining my interst in rubber stamping craft and photography. I've also been ill* and not venturing out for new shots, though there'll be some fresh yellow on Friday!

What do you think? Successful, or just a silly cover for some dud pics?

* Yellow is not an inappropriate theme colour: recently I've been in hospital with some irritating liver/biliary complaint and mild jaundice - errrr - yellowness - has been part of my pallor! But you're not getting a self-portrait of me like that.

  1. Sally, I think that it is fun when you can play around with one's photos and come up with something that pleases you! I like the fact that you experimented and found the end product enjoyable. Bravo!!

  2. I liked them, too. The first one reminds me of old images from the original Bulletin. Not sure how I would feel about a landscape given the same post-processing. However, it is appropriate for you personally at the moment.

  3. I think they are both quite interesting. I'll have to try something like this with my blurry shots! I just finished reading one of Augusten's books. I loved it! I imagine this was an entertaining evening.

  10. I'm with Kate on this one, Sally. You are the only one who can judge if these images are successful ... if they please you, then they are for sure. You're the artist and creator -:) FWIW, I like the first rendition best as it gives the feeling of great age, which is what I thought when seeing it on the portal tonight. Happy Theme Day, and keep playing!

  11. I think it is successful...from the thumbnail I was pretty sure I was going to see some famous Australian yellow painting I didn't know a thing about. I like it!

  14. You have a real skill in retouching! And, yes, the still life reminds me of Morandi too.

  15. Sorry you've not been too well recently. Hopefully you'll be better very soon and you can get snapping around my favourite city.

Nice work with the photo. I sometimes do things like that for another blog site.

  17. Oh dear! I hope you'll be over the curse of the yellow soon. :)

I like what you've done with these photos. The first one is very nice. I have loads of "unusable" shots but I wouldn't have the patience to play around with them on the computer.

  18. I love it Sally! I have a collection of those sorts of photos, the ones that mean nothing to anyone else, and you've really given them some value.

  20. Well Sally, this is the first account I've heard of a fellow blogger's body trying to enter the blogger herself into qualifying as an entrant in theme day. I am wishing you well and a speedy full recovery to health in the pink! (I'm so sorry you had to miss Eric's get together when you weren't feeling well.)

I love the top shot a lot and in my eyes it is really successful. What counts, though, is if YOU like it. And you do, so what could be better!

Thanks for your kind words. Your visits are always a treat for me. Your avitar photo always makes me smile.

  24. Your photoshop artistry is well done and a creative way to feature an image for which light and other conditions prevent an optimal conventional shot. You have our best wishes for a speedy and complete recover.

  27. Very creative idea. I agree with the others that the top one looks like a vintage newspaper. I have some candidated for the "grinder" as well. Hope you feel better soon.

  28. especially because of the left man's striped jacket, it gives a very 'old' touch to the photo. I like it.

  29. Sally, what great creative expression! Thanks for stopping by, in answer to your question about the Box Tops...Certain brands of food, etc. donate .10 cents for every "Box Top" clipped from that item. When the kids bring them to school, the school turns in the tops for labels!

  30. Very creative. There's always something you can do to save a photo that you are a bit unhappy about.

  31. I love photoshopping - you can really turn ordinary into extraordinary with a little tweaking and experimenting. Nice job. Hope you're feeling better!

  35. Oh Sally, I do hope you get well - jaundice is not a pretty picture. I think the photos are a success. I recently saw a movie where we see through the eyes of a character when she is putting her glasses on and off. Someone asks, "why do you do that?" And she says, "to see things differently".

  37. There's an interesting quality about it, for sure. And don't knock the idea of making a virtue out of a "bad" photograph - Lomo have made a fortune out of it.

Actually it is funny how closely we are wedded to the idea that a photo must be realistic - why?

  38. Thumbs up, Sally! It makes for a great post for this theme day.
    Get well soon!
