Preparing for the race, Rushcutters Bay

Every year Boxing Day sees the start of one of the world's great ocean races - the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Prior to the start, all the yachts are moored at the marina of the Cruising Yacht Club at Rushcutters Bay on Sydney Harbour. Anyone can go and wander around amongst the squillionaires and workaday yachties. I know nothing whatsoever about sea-going vessels, other than it's a pretty impressive sight. I do know that if I were ever to own a boat it would be more like this:
than this (which is owned by Australia's richest man, Jamie Packer):

Here's most of the racing fleet:

  1. I loved this race when I lived in Hobart for three years. Will think of you seeing those boats off.

And Sally, this comes with every good wish to you and your family for Christmas and for 2008. Thankyou for your visits to Menton and to Monte Carlo DP - and hey, see you in 2008!

  3. Sally, You live in such a lovely part of the world! Had to laugh at your boat of choice. I know that you are often strapped for time so I doubly appreciate your visits to my blog and your kind comments. I hope that your holiday is filled with love and laughter, and my 2008 be your best year ever!!

  4. Don't worry, Sally. There are only two happy days in the life of a boat owner: the day he bought the boat and the day he sold it...
Enjoy the season and have a Merry X-mas!

  5. I'm thinking of going to Sydney tomorrow to watch the start from Lang Point. I saw the first race leaving while fishing off the rocks there as a youngster in 46. No fuss about it then, and many Sydney siders didn't even know the event was on.

For years it remained a fairly leisurely affair. Return trips for many included a stop off in scenic Wineglass Bay on Tassie's East Coast. Old Timer's Disease strikes again?
