Cafe Latte

A beautifully presented latte at Cafe Clover in Annandale.

The first espresso machine was imported into Australia by an Italian in the 1950s. History here.

This was the heyday of post-WW2 Italian immigration to Australia (my in-laws for example) & had a profound impact on us. US Italian immigration largely predated the modern espresso machine, invented by Gaggia, so they missed out and had to wait for Starbucks to approximate a version of espresso coffee.

Starbucks has pretty much failed in Aust due to the widespread abailability of independent cafes. Even the smallest places have espresso machines. Latte, cappuccino, macchiato, short black, long black, flat white (like a latte but a bit less milk and frothiness) are part of out language!

  1. i was overseas for a lengthy period when this coffee parlance emerged. perhaps it was around before, i was just too ignorant to know about it. i found it, and still find it, annoying, mystifying and amusing all at the same time.

  4. I wonder if this story is true.

When the Olympic Games came to Australia for the first time in Nov 1956, the Italians wouldn't let their sons and daughters go to an uncivilised country that didn't have espresso machines.

As a result, during the first half of 1956, espresso machines were urgently shipped to Australia.

  5. I much prefer my flat white in a cup/mug like this than in a cardboard take-away version. The taste is totally different, it is frothier and the top is not as crusty in the take-away version. I am prepared to stand and drink the real thing at the counter, than go back to the office and sit down with a 'make-do'.

  7. I try to avoid Starbucks and other similar coffee places, much preferring to give my money to someone who cares about my coffee. This one in the photo looks great.

  8. I don't like Starbucks coffee!

Love a flat white, not so weak as lattes.

Don't know what I'd do without my Gaggia, can't abide instant coffee and I don't do tea!

(I'm not a huge Starbucks fan and I loathe paper cups)
