Wendy's Garden, Lavender Bay

From the North Sydney Council website:

"The area of state rail land situated between Clark Park and the railway lines/viaduct has been transformed from a weed-infested, neglected area into an intimate and attractive garden space which is an integral part of the Lavender Bay Parklands. Council currently leases this land from Railcorp, for the purposes of public open space."

The creation of this garden was the work of Wendy Whitely, after her husband, artist Brett Whitely died in 1992. It was her work of creativity born of grieving. Their daughter, Arkie, helped with the project. Arkie died in 2001. Both Brett and Arkie's ashes are buried here, in a location known only to Wendy.

The sculpture is entitled "Head" and is by Joel Elenberg, who was a friend of Brett Whitely's. He died of cancer, aged 32, in 1980.

Carss Park - last light

The light fades over Kogarah Bay from Carss Park. Friday night we went to the Carss Park Cafe and Grill for dinnner (for my birthday!). The food was superb, and the setting beautiful, and I enjoyed the company of my family.

Latest facade

The newest facade in Sydney is that of the redeveloped Westfield shopping centre (previously Centrepoint) in central Sydney.

Melbourne Cup

Yesterday, the first Tuesday in November, was Melbourne Cup Day ( a very significant horse race) - as it is every year. We watched the broadcast at work, and had a yummy afternoon tea. As a hat (or "fascinator") is compulsory for the races, I dressed for the occasion....

Jacaranda time

November is jacaranda blossom time in Sydney, and I feature a jacaranda shot every year. Above: Outside Sydney Town Hall, and Left; next door at St Andrews Cathedral.

Public Transport Theme Day

In Australia, "transportation" has a specific meaning : the removal of criminals from Britain and their transportation to the penal colonies which became Australia.

Public transport is another matter. Trains, trams, ferries, buses....

And here we are in the middle of a teachers' and community campaign for better funding for public schools. Three of these vans are transporting the message around NSW at the moment. Read more about that here.
